Located on 57 Cecil Street in Grantham, Cecil Street Fish Bar stands out as a cherished local gem in the fish and chips takeaway scene. Renowned for sticking to the authentic tradition of a classic chippie, this shop specializes exclusively in fish and chips rather than diluting quality with multiple cuisines. Their menu celebrates British seaside staples, featuring mouthwatering options such as large, flaky cod, tender haddock, crispy scampi, and other ocean delights like cod roe and plaice. For those craving something beyond fish, their assortment of burgers—from simple cheeseburgers to the indulgent bacon & egg burger—adds comforting variety, all crafted with the same attention to quality.
What truly distinguishes Cecil Street Fish Bar is the undeniable freshness and care evident in every bite. The batter on the fish is consistently crisp without being greasy, delivering a perfect crunch that gives way to the tender, succulent fish beneath. The chips are generously portioned and can be double-fried upon request, a testament to their commitment to customer satisfaction and quality even during busy Friday evenings. Complement your meal with traditional sides like mushy peas, curry sauce, or golden onion rings, each adding layers of texture and flavor that transport you straight to a classic British fish and chip experience.
Customers repeatedly praise not only the food but the warm, friendly service from the staff, who make every visit feel welcoming and personal. One regular, Saltpig Canteen, highlights the consistently good food quality and the accommodating attitude when asking for extra crispiness. Another customer, William Moore, drives several miles just to enjoy what he calls “Always great!” fish and chips. From freshly cooked large cod portions that stand up to scrutiny by even the most discerning chippie connoisseurs to hearty chips and the nostalgic sides, Cecil Street Fish Bar delivers a genuine taste of comfort food at its finest.
In a world where many takeaway shops branch out into kebabs and multiple cuisines, Cecil Street Fish Bar’s dedication to perfecting the classic British fish and chips experience is refreshing. The cozy, no-frills setup reinforces the sense of authenticity, providing locals and visitors alike a reliable spot to enjoy one of Britain’s most beloved culinary treats. We’ve tried a few chippies in Grantham and Cecil Street Fish Bar has been consistently good in terms of food quality and service. Their fish is decent, the batter is crisp, and they’re always friendly. I also usually ask them to put the chips back in the fryer to crisp them up and they never have an issue with doing that, even on a busy Friday evening. Would love to see the option of Panko breadcrumbs. Tried that recently elsewhere and it’s amazing.

Glad to see a local fish and chip shop in a residential area still going. Also nice to see a proper fish and chip shop and not one selling kebabs and burgers as well. The staff were nice and helpful. The food was great.

Always great!! I drive from the other side of town near the A1 to go to this place. Tried some others a lot nearer, and some close to this on the main road, no match.

My other chippie post went viral, where a particular fish and chip shop claimed they were selling me a large fish. This failed the wooden spoon measuring test! The jokers! Cecil Street Fish Bar in Grantham shows how it should be done. A large cod IS a large cod, freshly cooked on arrival. The chip portion sizes are very generous, and mushy peas or curry sauce sides do the trick! Friendly staff. Service with a smile. Worth repeated visits. You are guaranteed a decent meal. Hats off to Cecil Street Fish Bar!
